The air is brisk this evening in Genoa City. Dru wraps her coat around her tighter as the chilly air cools her bones. Dru is walking fast, upset as flashes of Leslie caressing Neil’s face anger her. She’s down town. She stops for a bit when she sees the old Brash and Sassy store front that now sits empty. Then she remembers her old hair line Tuvia and looks on the other side of the shopping plaza and sees the Tuvia outlet also sits vacant. She can still make out the word Tuvia from where the letters were once placed on the store front. Then she thinks of Newman, where it all happened. She looks in the direction of Newman tower which is the easiest building to see since the Newman building is the tallest building in the Genoa City skyline. Dru realizes Newman tower is still standing but the Newman name has been removed.
Dru: I thought that was Newman Tower. I wonder what happened, it’s no longer there.
Dru buttons up her coat and continues to enjoy the crisp cool air and all the sights she’s missed in Genoa City since she was presumed dead. As the colorful fall leaves fall past her face she thinks of her husband Neil and begins to get angry again. As her thoughts get the better of her she begins to walk even faster. She thinks of Leslie and her attitude that came with her.
Dru: You’s a sly one Miss Leslie. I can see right through you.
She says aloud trying to reassure herself.
Dru is now in Midtown GC and spots a bar that she’s never seen before.
Dru: Dru could use a drink. This GC Nights looks nice for grown folks. I can hear jazz coming out the place. This is def a place for me.
She enters and looks around. The place is casted over with a blue light. The place is half empty. Dru walks over to the bar and flings her oversized purse onto the bar and looks at the liquor bottles.
Tyler the bartender walks over to her.
Tyler: Never seen you here before.
Dru smiles: What a cutie you are. I’ve never seen you either. I just got back into town.
Tyler: Long trip?
Dru: Very. Now I’m angry because some bitch is trying to claim my husband for herself. You have a drink that will cure that?
Tyler chuckles: I think I can work something out.
Tyler grabs a vodka bottle and fruit juice. He mixes it up and puts a lime in it. He sets it on the bar. Dru grabs it and takes a sip.
Dru: OOO yes honey. This is tasty. I haven’t had a drink in years.
Tyler: In years, where were you in jail or something?
Dru: No cutie, I was dead.
Tyler gives a confused look.

Episode 192: Worst Case Scenario for Neil Winters!
Written by ML Cooks
The Hospital, Neil’s room
Neil: Leslie I can’t feel my legs I can’t move!
Leslie: Neil calm down. Dr. Whitefield will be here soon.
Having strained himself from trying to move Neil lays back in the bed in defeat. He closes his eyes and shakes his head in disbelief.
Leslie: How do you feel now Neil?
Neil: I’m starting to remember what happened to me. Some man shot me… Point blank in the chest. There was this most incredible, shocking impact you could ever imagine–equivalent with having a quarter stick of dynamite go off in your shirt pocket–and I can tell you Leslie, I was sent reeling. It felt like I was thrown back a good 2-to-5 feet or more, as my legs gave out on me. There was simultaneously, a feeling like a bomb went off INSIDE of my chest, and that of being jack-hammered through my chest wall–all of this, all at once. Then, everything seemed to go into slow motion, as undoubtedly, a large amount of adrenaline was released causing my central nervous system to fire faster–like a high-speed camera, producing a slow motion effect.
Leslie has a tear rolling down her cheek as she listens to Neil describe Malcolm shooting him.
Leslie: I’m so sorry Neil. I’m sorry you had to go through that. Your safe now and you pulled through. I will protect you.
Neil looks at Leslie and smiles.
Neil: I don’t know what it is but you make me feel so good.
Leslie leans down and gives him a peck on the lips. Then Dr. Whitefield walks in.
Kiko: And how is Mr. Winters?
Leslie: He was telling me what his emotions were when he was shot.
Neil: Doctor I can’t feel or move my legs.
Leslie: Neil also seems to be suffering some type of amnesia.
Kiko: Yea about that. That’s why I’m here.
Leslie and Neil both look at Kiko nervously awaiting answers and fearing the worst.
With the ground cooler than the air, a fog forms tonight. Keemo is walking through a cemetery. He takes his time and looks at each tombstone as he takes in this somber moment and gets ready to do what he came to do. Some of the names he sees are, first and fore most, Katherine Chancellor, Kevin Fisher, Cane Ashby, Sharon Newman, John Abbott, Sophia Dupree and Tucker McCall. He stops when he comes upon a tombstone that reads Laun Volien Died in 1996.
Keemo kneels down and puts his hand on the tombstone. He then takes a picture out of his wallet. It’s of his mother and his father Jack. Keemo begins to sob as he stares at the picture. He then becomes angry and tears it in half and throwing Jacks half of the picture on the ground.
Keemo: Damn you Jack! You knew all along my mother was dying and did not have the decency to tell me or my sister Mai. You stole moments from us, me and my sister from our dying mother. We could have did a lot of things differently. But no you had to have things your way. Just like now. With me and Gloria.
He stops, wipes his eyes and smiles a bit as he thinks of Gloria. He looks at Laun’s name engraved in the tombstone.
Keemo: I’m lost right now mother. I’m torn and confused. Gloria won’t return my love because of my grand dad and I made a deal with Victor to go after Jack. Am I doing the right thing? Will I be taking this war too far if I pair up with Victor? I don’t have the answers mother. I wish you were here to help guide me. I don’t know what to do to make things right for me. One thing is for sure, I am going to get Jack back from keeping this illness you had from me and Mai. He had no right to do that. He will pay mother. Victor and I will make him pay.
Keemo gets up and fixes his coat. He steps on Jacks picture as he leaves having paid respects to his mother.
Chicago Ill,
Nina is driving as Chance is in the front passenger seat with Esther and Karynn in the back as Garret is sitting in between them drives into the parking lot of Golden Times Nursing Home. Garret smiles at both Esther and Karynn as he looks back and forth at each one of them.
Karynn: You’re giving me the creeps you troll.
Garret places his hand on Karynn’s knee.
Karynn looks at his hand and then up at Garrett.
Karynn: If you don’t get your hands off me I’ll ash this cigarette right on your forehead you shrimp.
She says as she blows a mouth full of smoke in Garrets face. Garret turns his head and coughs.
Garret: I got asthma these days Kary. You can’t be doing that kind of stuff to a pimp like me. It’s rude and disrespectful.
Karynn: The smell of your breath is rude and disrespectful. You’re a rotten pig. No wonder you stink. Nina damn it hurry up and park this little car. I can’t take it!
Chance looks back at Garret from the front seat.
Chance: Keep your hands off the ladies.
Garrett: Or what? You very hostile with me. You a racist or what?
Nina: Shut your mouth Garrett! You will not talk to my son like that. It’s not about race. You seem to be a true loser and We’ve never been around people like that. Karynn yes but not the rest of us.
Karynn: PARK THE CAR NOW NINA! I NEED TO OPEN THIS BEER, GARRET IS DRIVING ME TO DRINK. Not now Nina but NOW!! As in today.
Nina flies into a parking space and slams on the break.
Chance: Mom what is going on?
Nina: It’s that damn Karynn! She’s nerve wracking and she has a friend with her too.
Karynn: Oh damn you too Nina. Open this damn door. Car so small I can’t see where the door handle is.
Nina: It’s a sport utility vehicle.
Karynn: Nina just hand me the beer.
Chance gets out the car to open Karynn’s door. Karynn steps one foot out and takes a deep breathe.
Karynn: Finally I can breathe. No more funk master shrimp.
Karynn extends her hand so Chance can grab it.
Karynn: Just don’t stand there handsome. Help an old woman out this small car.
Nina rolls her eyes as Chance pulls Karynn out. She walks around to Nina’s window and reaches in to snatch away the beer that Nina has just opened.
Nina: You are really a mess. We are about to see your ailing brother and the only thing you wanna do is drink a damn beer.
Karynn: Nina I’ve almost had it with you. Does that naggy mouth ever stop!
Esther and Garret get out the SUV.
Garret: Kary is you done yet girl. I’m ready to make sure my good man Karl is ok. I can’t believe its’ come to this.
Chance: You really care for Karl?
Garret: Oh sho’ I do. Karl is a good man.
Karynn finishes up her beer and then burps.
Karynn: That felt great. Nothing better than Old English.
Nina: You’re appalling. I can’t see how even a man like Garret would find anything remotely attractive about you.
Karynn crushes her beer can with her two hands and then tosses it in Nina’s widow which lands in Nina’s lap.
Karynn then leans against the car and lights up a Virginia Slim.
Nina is shocked and livid that drops of beer have spilled on her. Nina throws the beer can out the window and Chance rushes over to intervene. He grabs his mother’s hand as she gets out the SUV.
Chance: Mom just calm down. It will only make things worse.
Esther: Let’s go see Mr. Sheppard.
Esther says to Karynn.
Karynn takes another drag of her cancer stick and then flicks it in Nina’s direction.
Nina: How dare you!
Karynn then blows smoke in Nina’s face as she walks past her entering the nursing home.
Esther follows behind along with Garret.
Nina: Bitch.
Chance: Mom calm down please. We are here for Karl. Don’t let Karynn get to you.
Nina tries to wrestle out of her son’s hold but is unsuccessful.
Nina: I’ve had it with Karynn!!
West of Chicago, Genoa City, the hospital
Leslie and Neil are waiting on answers from the doctor. Kiko approaches them.
Leslie: How could Neil have amnesia after being shot in the chest?
Kiko: It’s very simple. There are a few kinds of amnesia. People hear the word and think memory loss. It is but it’s more than that. Neil’s amnesia has been brought on by a traumatic event. Neil has dissociative amnesia which can be brought on psychologically. To break it down even further, Neil has dissociative fugue. That is what his amnesia is called or it is also known as fugue state. It is caused by psychological trauma and is usually temporary, unresolved and therefore may return. An individual with dissociative fugue disorder is unaware or confused about his or her identity and will travel in journeys away from familiar surroundings to discover or create new identities.
Neil: I don’t know who I am and I can’t walk.
Leslie: So this is why he did not remember Dru?
Kiko: Yes. Neil has forgotten his past. He may not recognize his children as well.
Leslie: But he remembers me.
Kiko: Likely. The brain must have associated to happier times with Neil and he’s allowed you in.
Leslie: He seemed to be very scared of Dru.
Kiko: Neil has been through so much. His brain is protecting him from further trauma. There must be some outlying issues with Dru and Neil.
Neil: I can’t walk doctor. I can’t feel anything down there.
Kiko: The bullet ricocheted around in your chest like a pinball, first penetrating your entire chest mass, fracture and bounced off the left scapula, hurled back through your chest again, fractured a rib, and then bounced back through, traced a path around another rib, puncturing the pleural lining off your left lung. Then next flying straight into your spinal column, fracturing your T-9 and T-10 thoracic vertebrae, and transecting your spinal cord.
Leslie covers her mouth in disbelief.
Neil has tears in his eyes.
Neil: Wow.
Kiko: Wow is right and you are lucky to be alive.
Neil: My legs. You mentioned spinal cord. I can’t move my legs doctor!
Kiko take a deep breathe.
Kiko: I’m sorry Neil with the damage to your spinal column, it has rendered you a paraplegic.
Leslie screams out.
Neil closes his eyes tightly wishing this was all a dream.

ReplyDeleteI can’t get enough of the balance you are providing in these episodes. I have learned a great deal from it, and will apply it in my fanfic.
Dru: It was nice to see her go through town reminiscing and you reminding us of the history she has with the city. That line to Tyler was PRICELESS...LOVED IT...That line epitomizes your style. “No, Cutie I was dead.” HILARIOUS!!!!
Keemo: That scene by the grave was really deep in the sense that I am seeing the depths in which Keemo hates Jack, and not only because he wasn’t there to raise him. I see Keemo’s motivation to seek revenge on Jack and take him down, but he IS still his father. I wonder if that will mess with his conscience because we know Victor will show no mercy to Jack.
Karynn/Nina/Chance/Garret: Their scenes are absolutely funny. Karynn blowing smoke in Nina’s face; Nina channeling her younger days; Chance keeping everyone focused as to why they are actually there, which keeps me focused also. I know how big this is going to be, but the interaction between them are wonderful and provides sort of a cushion to what’s about to come.
Leslie/Neil: Deep scenes here. Leslie is trying her best to comfort him, but I could also feel a bit of helplessness on her part because there really is nothing she can do about Neil’s paralysis. And I really appreciated the medical diagnosis that Kiko gave him. It shows you did your research and it added depth to the scene.
This is great!! You are giving depth to these characters while providing great balance to your episodes. I am enjoying this...
Very good job again finding the balance between the light and the dark. I loved Dru's walk through Genoa City and all the abandoned storefronts Newman's downfall has left in its wake. Dru was once again so much on point. Loved her quip to Tyler.
ReplyDeleteVery good scene with Keemo exploring his conflict with Jack, and the resentment he had towards him. Fantastic scene. You're digging deep.
I enjoyed the Chicago crew yet again. Karynn is a hard woman and a stubborn one at that. Amazing that anyone could hold her down, let alone someone like Garrett who seems so buffoonish. Love their interplay!
Finally, Neil learning about his paralysis, a very intense scene for him and Leslie. I loved how you expressed his confusion at his state, as well as making it very clear to us what's going on with him.
Great work all around!
